Adiponectin is a soluble adipocytokine that is famed for its crucial role in adipose tissue functioning and inflammation regulation, particularly hepatic. Thus it is inevitably associated with metabolic and hepato-inflammatory diseases.

Recently, lipotoxicity-induced inflammation in the liver is explained to be linked with obesity-derived alterations and remolding in adipose tissue that terminates in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Research on adiponectin and its cognate receptors, particularly adiponectin receptor-2 in the liver has shown to improve obesity-induced NAFLD synergistically with hepatic peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs).

Recent researches have shown the involvement of molecular mediators in the pathogenesis of obesity and obesity-driven NAFLD, however, the probable mechanisms are yet to be determined. Thus a good knowledge and further researches on adiponectin-mediated pathophysiological outcomes will help in developing new therapies that can potentially resolve obesity and obesity-associated NAFLD.
